Each time a patient receives treatment, a detailed record is maintained containing observations, medical or surgical interventions and treatment outcomes. Coders are responsible for assigning a code to each specific diagnosis or procedure. They consult classification manuals, but they also rely on their acquired knowledge of disease processes. Medical Coders are detail-oriented and enjoy doing research.
ATA's Medical Coding program can be completed in as little as 17 months. It consists of 92 credit hours.
